The Laguna Madre is one of only three hypersaline lagoons in the world, meaning it is very salty, even saltier than the Gulf of Mexico. The Laguna averages less than three feet deep and no rivers flow into it. This fact helps make the Lower Laguna Madre the cleanest bay in Texas. The shallow water promotes luxuriant seagrass growth serving as both food and shelter for many sport and commercial fishes as well as acting as a nursery ground for developing and growing Gulf shrimp.  80% of  North America's Red Head ducks winter in the Laguna Madre.
